Bad Guys Doing Good!

Blue Sun Squad is based in Central Kentucky, with members living as far away as Monticello, Paducah, Owensboro, Bowling Green, Louisville and Northern Kentucky. Our squad is comprised of multiple members who live in these areas, as well as a few former members and friends of the Squad who currently reside outside of the Garrison's geographic boundaries. We have been honored to join with multiple other garrisons and squads, as well as other Star Wars groups (Mandalorian Mercs, Rebel Legion) to bring countless smiles to young faces and raise funds to support those who need them.

Blue Sun Squad has trooped everything from the Lexington Comic and Toy Convention, which had an attendance above 20,000 in 2014, to birthday parties with less than 10 kids in attendance. We have attended and taken part in fundraising walks in multiple states, in full armor. We have been on stage with Weird Al Yankovic, and we have been a part of a crossing-over event for a cub scout troop. Below is a list of some of the events we've taken part in.

  • Lexington Comic and Toy Convention, Lexington, KY, March 2013 & March 2014
  • Bluegrass Cosplay Convention, Lexington, KY, April 2014
  • Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Fundraising Walk, Knoxville, TN, April 2014
  • Sonny's Last Chemo Treatment, Lexington, KY, June 2014
  • Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Fundraising Walk, Louisville, KY, April 2014
  • Cincinnati Walks for Kids with Team Toby, Cincinnati, OH, September 2014
Blue Sun is a squad within the Midsouth Garrison of the 501st Legion. The Midsouth Garrison is defined by the geographic boundaries of the states of Tennesse and Kentucky, and includes 157 members of the legion living in all corners of both states. Members of our garrison regularly travel extensively within both states to join their brothers and sisters in armor, and have been known to troop outside the garrison as well. In short, any excuse to put on armor and bring smiles to kids and adults who love Star Wars...we'll be there.

Why that name, Blue Sun Squad?

Image 06 Squad names in the 501st Legion are expected to tie in to the region or area where the squad is located. For example, Mos Nooga squad is also in the Midsouth Garrison, and based in and around Chattanooga, Tennesse; Tampa Bay Squad is obviously located in Tampa Bay, Florida; Rio Squad, Rio De Janeiro in Brazil. Once the founding members of our squad decided to apply for squad designation, we needed a name that would (at least partially) tie us to the region we live in.

Blue Sun was chosen after much debate between that and other names. We finally decided on our squad name because it tied us in to our region for multiple reasons, as well as paying tribute to several science fiction influences.

In the state of Kentucky, blue is king. Bluegrass state. Go Big Blue. Big Blue Nation. The list goes on. While we didn’t mind being tied to Kentucky, we didn’t want to choose something like “Wildcat Squad” or something similar that could suggest an affiliation with the University of Kentucky. While several of the squad are fans of Kentucky athletics, it’s not what the squad is about. We chose blue as more of a tribute to our home state of Kentucky, the Bluegrass state.

So, we had a part of the name; Blue. The second part, Sun, was chosen for several reason. Timothy Zahn, in the Thrawn Trilogy, created several memorable characters and plotlines. He also created an organized crime organization, known as Black Sun, that played in integral part in his stories. Blue Sun is a nod to Mr. Zahn’s work…as well as fellow science fiction guru Joss Whedon. In Whedon’s universe full of Browncoats and a certain Firefly class spaceship, there is a company known as Blue Sun.

Bluegrass state, Tim Zahn, and Joss Whedon. With influences like this around us, how could we go wrong with this name?

Blue Sun Squad we are.
